Interview with Professional Boxer Stephen Smith

Professional Boxer, Stephen Smith, has picked up numerous titles during his career including the British Featherweight and Commonwealth Featherweight Champion. We caught up with him to discover how his career in boxing began, how he prepares for his matches and what’s lined up for the future.

How did your career in boxing begin?

My elder brother boxed, so like any young lad I followed my brother anywhere and followed him into the gym.

What boxers inspired you growing up?

I loved watching Naseem Hamed but my boxing hero is Sugar Ray Leonard.

You've boxed alongside some great names already, who would be your ultimate competitor?

I'm not sure to be honest. If that means the best faced then I'd probably say Jose Pedraza impressed me a lot.

You've won numerous titles including being a Silver Super Featherweight and a Commonwealth Featherweight Champion. What's been your proudest moment so far?

Probably winning the commonwealth games gold medal as an amateur in Melbourne being away from home etc. but as a pro, my first title will always be special against Simpson in Glasgow.

How do you mentally prepare for a boxing match?

Just make sure I've done everything right and there's no doubts.

You have fought around the world. How does it feel boxing in your hometown?

It's always nice to have good vocal support, it spurs you on.

You and your boxing brothers (Callum, Paul and Liam) have set up a Team Smith Bros boxing and coaching academy. Can you tell us more about that?

It's going to be a good opportunity for young people to develop their education as well as their boxing skills.

What have you got lined up next?

A nice Christmas with my kids, then hopefully their is talks about a rematch with Sosa so I would love that fight.
